There are two solstices:
* Summer solstice: Occurs around June 20-22 in the Northern Hemisphere and December 21-23 in the Southern Hemisphere. It marks the longest day of the year.
* Winter solstice: Occurs around December 21-23 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20-22 in the Southern Hemisphere. It marks the shortest day of the year.
The word "solstice" comes from the Latin words "sol" (sun) and "sistere" (to stand still), referring to the apparent pause of the sun at its highest or lowest point in the sky.
