What part of speech is the word safely?

"Safely" is an adverb.

Here's why:

* It modifies a verb: It tells us *how* something is done. For example: "The plane landed safely." "Safely" describes the manner in which the plane landed.

* It can also modify an adjective or another adverb: "He was safely tucked in bed." "Safely" modifies the adjective "tucked."
