Two kinds of verbs are called what?

Two kinds of verbs are called transitive and intransitive.

* Transitive verbs require a direct object. They "transfer" action to something or someone.

* Example: "The dog chased the ball." (The action of "chased" is transferred to the ball.)

* Intransitive verbs do not require a direct object. They express a complete action without needing something to receive it.

* Example: "The baby slept soundly." (The action of "slept" is complete in itself.)
