What does the slang speakeasy mean?

"Speakeasy" is a slang term for a secret bar or nightclub that operated illegally during the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933).

Here's why they were called speakeasies:

* Prohibition: The 18th Amendment to the US Constitution prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages.

* Secrecy: To avoid detection by authorities, these establishments operated in secret locations, often disguised as shops or restaurants.

* Whispering: Patrons had to speak quietly to avoid attracting attention, hence the term "speakeasy."

The term "speakeasy" has since become synonymous with any hidden or clandestine bar, even though alcohol is no longer illegal in the US. It is often used to describe bars with a cool, underground vibe or those requiring a password or special knowledge to gain entry.
