When someone says something put inverted commas?

You use inverted commas (also called quotation marks) around something when:

* Direct Speech: You are quoting someone's exact words. For example: "I'm going to the store," she said.

* Titles of Works: You are referring to the title of a book, song, movie, article, etc. For example: I just finished reading "The Great Gatsby."

* Words with a Specific Meaning: You are using a word in a way that is different from its usual meaning, or you are highlighting the word for emphasis. For example: He called the politician a "puppet" of the wealthy.

* Technical or Specialized Terms: You are using a term that might not be familiar to everyone, or you are using it in a specific context. For example: "Biometrics" is the science of measuring and identifying living organisms.

There are different types of quotation marks:

* Double Quotation Marks ( " " ) are the most common type.

* Single Quotation Marks ( ' ' ) are used for quotes within quotes. For example: "She said, 'I'm going to the store,' and left."

It's important to be consistent with your use of quotation marks throughout your writing.
