What parts of speech does an adverb never modify?

Adverbs typically modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They tell us *how*, *when*, *where*, *why*, or *to what extent* something happens.

However, adverbs cannot modify nouns.

Here's why:

* Nouns represent people, places, things, or ideas.

* Adverbs describe actions, qualities, or other adverbs.

Let's look at an example:

Incorrect: "The *quickly* dog ran."

Correct: "The dog ran *quickly*."

In the incorrect sentence, "quickly" is incorrectly modifying the noun "dog". In the correct sentence, "quickly" modifies the verb "ran", describing how the dog ran.

Remember: Adverbs provide extra information about verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, not nouns.
