What does est ce que mean in French?

"Est-ce que" in French is a way to ask a question. It literally means "Is it that", but in English, it translates to:

* "Is it true that..."

* "Do you..."

* "Are you..."

* "Does..."

* "Is..."

For example:

* Est-ce que tu parles français ? (Is it true that you speak French? / Do you speak French?)

* Est-ce que vous êtes fatigué ? (Is it true that you are tired? / Are you tired?)

* Est-ce que le train arrive à l'heure ? (Is it true that the train arrives on time? / Does the train arrive on time?)

* Est-ce que c'est bon ? (Is it true that it's good? / Is it good?)

You can also use "est-ce que" for yes/no questions.

* Est-ce que tu as faim ? (Are you hungry?)

* Est-ce que vous voulez du café ? (Do you want coffee?)

In informal speech, you can often omit "est-ce que" and simply use the verb in the interrogative form.

* Tu parles français ?

* Vous êtes fatigué ?

* Le train arrive à l'heure ?

However, using "est-ce que" can make the question sound more polite or formal.
