Is the word should a verb?

"Should" is not a verb on its own. It's a modal auxiliary verb.

Here's why:

* Modal auxiliaries are helping verbs that modify the main verb. They indicate things like possibility, necessity, obligation, or permission.

* They cannot stand alone as verbs. They need a main verb to complete the sentence.

Examples:

* Should I go? (Main verb: "go")

* You should study harder. (Main verb: "study")

* We should have left earlier. (Main verb: "have left")
