Is a noun or adjtive?

"A" is a definite article. It's used before singular countable nouns to specify a particular one. It's not a noun or an adjective itself.

Here's an example:

* A dog (dog is the noun)

* The a in the word "cat" is silent. (Here, "a" is part of the word, not a separate word)
