Here's what you can do to identify an adverb:
* Ask yourself "How?" "When?" "Where?" "To what extent?" Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, answering these questions.
* Example: "The dog quickly ran across the yard." (How did the dog run?)
* Look for words ending in "-ly" Many adverbs end in "-ly," but not all do.
* Example: "The children played happily in the park."
* Consider the function of the word in the sentence. Does it describe how, when, where, or to what extent an action or characteristic is happening? If so, it's likely an adverb.
Sentences are made up of words, including adverbs. So, you can identify adverbs within a sentence, but not the sentence itself.
