How many moods may a French verb have?

French verbs have six moods, which are:

1. Indicative: Describes a fact or an action that is certain to happen. (e.g., "Je mange." - I eat.)

2. Subjunctive: Expresses a wish, a doubt, or a possibility. (e.g., "J'espère qu'il pleuve." - I hope it rains.)

3. Conditional: Expresses a hypothetical situation or a conditional action. (e.g., "J'irais au cinéma si j'avais le temps." - I would go to the cinema if I had time.)

4. Imperative: Gives a command or makes a request. (e.g., "Mange!" - Eat!)

5. Infinitive: The basic form of a verb. (e.g., "manger" - to eat)

6. Participle: A verb form that acts as an adjective or noun. (e.g., "ayant mangé" - having eaten)

Note: Some sources may only mention five moods, omitting the infinitive. This is because the infinitive is considered a verb form rather than a mood.
