Does a comma come before or after alternatively?

The word "alternatively" is usually followed by a comma. This is because it typically introduces a contrasting or alternative option, creating a pause in the sentence.

Example:

"We can take the train to the city, or alternatively, we can drive."

However, there are some exceptions:

* When "alternatively" is used as an adverb: If "alternatively" is used to modify a verb or adjective, a comma might not be necessary.

Example:

"They alternatively walked and ran."

* When "alternatively" is part of a phrase: If "alternatively" is part of a longer phrase that acts as a single unit, a comma might not be needed before it.

Example:

"We can choose the blue option, or alternatively the green one."

In general, it's a good rule of thumb to use a comma after "alternatively" when it introduces a contrasting option or idea.
