What comes before a root word?

There are a few things that can come before a root word:

* Prefixes: These are word parts added to the beginning of a root word to change its meaning. Examples: "un" in "unhappy," "pre" in "preview," "re" in "rewrite."

* Other Root Words: Some words are formed by combining two or more root words. These are sometimes called compound words. Examples: "sun" and "flower" in "sunflower," "book" and "case" in "bookcase."

* Nothing: Sometimes the root word stands alone, without any prefixes or other words attached. Examples: "play," "read," "run."

It's important to remember that prefixes and suffixes are added to root words to create new words. The root word itself is the core meaning of the word.
