What are verbs ending with ing?

Verbs ending in "-ing" are called present participles. They are used in a variety of ways in English grammar:

1. Forming the continuous tenses:

* Present continuous: I am walking.

* Past continuous: I was walking.

* Future continuous: I will be walking.

2. As adjectives:

* The running water was cold.

* The singing bird was beautiful.

3. As nouns:

* Swimming is good exercise.

* Reading is my favorite hobby.

4. After certain verbs:

* I enjoy singing.

* She started dancing.

5. In participial phrases:

* Walking down the street, I saw a friend.

* Having finished my homework, I went to the park.

Note: Not all words ending in "-ing" are verbs. Some are nouns (e.g., "morning," "wedding") or adjectives (e.g., "charming," "interesting").
