What does suffix ly means?

The suffix "-ly" is used to form adverbs from adjectives. It generally indicates:

* manner: How something is done.

* degree: To what extent something is done.

Here are some examples:

Adjective | Adverb | Meaning

---|---|---|

slow | slowly | in a slow manner

quick | quickly | in a quick manner

happy | happily | with happiness

loud | loudly | in a loud manner

terrible | terribly | to a terrible degree

Note: Not all words ending in "-ly" are adverbs. Some are simply adjectives, like "friendly" or "lovely".

In addition to forming adverbs, "-ly" can sometimes be used to create new adjectives, such as "earthly" or "timely".
