Where did the word mathematics come from?

The word "mathematics" comes from the Ancient Greek word μάθημα (máthema), which means "learning" or "study".

The word "mathematics" itself was first used in English in the 16th century. It is derived from the Latin word mathematica, which was itself a direct translation of the Greek word μάθημα.

While the term itself is relatively new, the study of mathematics has been around for thousands of years. Early civilizations like the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greeks developed sophisticated mathematical concepts and tools.

So, while the word "mathematics" might be relatively new, the concepts and ideas behind it have a long and rich history.
