Are could and would weak verbs?

The verbs "could" and "would" are modal verbs. Modal verbs are a special category of verbs that are not considered "weak" or "strong" in the traditional sense.

Here's why:

* They don't have the typical past tense forms: "Strong" verbs change their stem vowel to form the past tense (e.g., "sing" becomes "sang"). "Weak" verbs add "-ed" or "-d" (e.g., "walk" becomes "walked"). Modal verbs don't follow this pattern.

* They don't have infinitive forms: They are always followed by the infinitive form of another verb (e.g., "I could go", "She would like").

Therefore, "could" and "would" don't fit into the traditional categories of "weak" and "strong" verbs. They are part of a separate group with their own characteristics and grammatical roles.
