What part of speech is apparently?

"Apparently" can be either an adverb or an adjective, depending on how it's used in a sentence.

Here are some examples:

Adverb:

* "Apparently, the meeting is cancelled." (modifies the verb "is")

* "He was walking around apparently lost." (modifies the adjective "lost")

Adjective:

* "That was an apparently simple task, but it turned out to be quite difficult." (modifies the noun "task")

In general, when "apparently" is used to describe a situation or a statement, it's an adverb. When it's used to describe something's appearance, it's an adjective.
