What is the definition of word indirect?

Indirect means not directly related to or affecting something. It can also mean not stated directly or explicitly.

Here are some ways to understand "indirect":

* Not direct: If you take an indirect route, you don't travel in a straight line.

* Not explicit: If you give someone an indirect compliment, you might say something like "I really like your new haircut," instead of directly stating "You look amazing!"

* Implied: An indirect statement might imply something without actually saying it. For example, saying "It's getting cold" could indirectly imply that you'd like the person to close the window.

Here are some examples of how "indirect" can be used:

* "The company faced indirect consequences from the scandal." (The consequences were not directly caused by the scandal, but were related to it.)

* "He gave her an indirect compliment by saying she was 'very talented.'" (He didn't directly say she was beautiful, but the compliment was implied.)

* "The evidence was circumstantial and indirect." (The evidence did not directly prove the person's guilt, but it suggested it.)

The opposite of "indirect" is direct.
