What is the end punctuation of a sentence with parentheses?

The end punctuation of a sentence with parentheses depends on the placement of the parentheses:

1. Parentheses within the sentence:

* If the parentheses contain a complete thought, the end punctuation goes outside the parentheses.

* Example: "The cat (a tabby with green eyes) was sleeping on the couch."

* If the parentheses contain an incomplete thought, the end punctuation goes inside the parentheses.

* Example: "The cat was sleeping on the couch (a tabby with green eyes)."

2. Parentheses at the end of the sentence:

* The end punctuation goes outside the parentheses.

* Example: "The cat was sleeping on the couch (he looked very comfortable)."

Important note: If the parentheses contain a question or exclamation, the appropriate punctuation goes inside the parentheses, even if the parentheses are at the end of the sentence.

* Example: "The cat was sleeping on the couch (is he dreaming?)"

* Example: "The cat was sleeping on the couch (what a sight!)"
