What must have a direct object?

Transitive verbs must have a direct object.

Here's why:

* Transitive verbs express actions that *transfer* to something or someone.

* Direct objects are the things or people that receive the action of the transitive verb.

Example:

* Transitive verb: "throw"

* Direct object: "ball"

* Sentence: "She threw the ball." (The action of throwing is transferred to the ball.)

Here are some more examples of transitive verbs:

* Eat: "He ate the pizza."

* Write: "She wrote a letter."

* Build: "They built a house."

* Love: "I love my family."

Note:

* Intransitive verbs do not require a direct object. They express actions that are complete in themselves. For example: "The dog slept." (There's no object receiving the action of sleeping.)
