What does accept and except mean?

"Accept" and "except" are two words that sound very similar but have completely different meanings. Here's a breakdown:

Accept

* Meaning: To receive or agree to something offered.

* Example: I accept your apology.

* Synonyms: Receive, agree to, take, acknowledge

Except

* Meaning: To exclude or leave out something.

* Example: Everyone went to the party except for John.

* Synonyms: But, excluding, besides, apart from

Remember this:

* Accept is about *taking* something.

* Except is about *leaving out* something.

A helpful trick:

Think of the "c" in accept as standing for "come" (to receive something). The "x" in except reminds you of "x out" (to exclude something).
