What part of speech is onto?

"Onto" can be two different parts of speech, depending on how it's used:

1. Preposition: When "onto" indicates movement or direction towards and onto a surface, it acts as a preposition.

* Example: The cat jumped onto the table.

2. Adverb: When "onto" modifies a verb or adjective, it acts as an adverb. It often means "in addition to" or "furthermore."

* Example: The new CEO brought onto the team several new, highly skilled employees.

To determine the part of speech, look at how the word is being used in a sentence and see if it's acting as a connector between words or modifying another word.
