Is the noun river a place or thing?

"River" is a thing.

While a river flows through a place, it's not the place itself. It's a body of water, a geographical feature.

Think of it this way:

* Place: The Amazon rainforest

* Thing: The Amazon River

The Amazon River is a thing that exists within the place of the Amazon rainforest.
