Why no singular for tongs?

The word "tongs" is a plural noun. It has no singular form because it refers to a tool that inherently consists of two parts.

Think of it this way:

* Scissors are always a pair, not a single "scissor".

* Pliers are always two parts, not a single "plier".

Similarly, tongs are always two arms joined together, making a "single" tong impossible.

If you need to refer to one of the arms of the tongs, you would use the term "prong" or "jaw" of the tongs.
