Does steal have a long vowel or short vowel?

"Steal" has a short vowel sound.

Here's why:

* Short vowel sounds are typically quick and sharp.

* Long vowel sounds are typically drawn out and often sound like the letter's name.

The "ea" in "steal" does not make the long "e" sound (like in "see"). It makes a short, quick "e" sound, similar to the "e" in "bed".
