What part of speech is widely?

"Widely" is an adverb.

Here's why:

* It modifies a verb: It describes how something is done. For example, "The news was widely reported." "Widely" tells us how the news was reported.

* It can also modify an adjective or another adverb: "The plan was widely accepted." ("Widely" modifies "accepted")
