What part of speech is properly?

"Properly" is an adverb.

Here's why:

* It modifies a verb: It tells us *how* something is done. For example, "He completed the task properly."

* It can also modify an adjective or another adverb: "The house was properly decorated." (modifying the adjective "decorated") or "He sang the song very properly." (modifying the adverb "very").
