Why is pail the long a sound?

The word "pail" has a long "a" sound because it is pronounced like the word "pale". The "ai" combination in "pail" doesn't follow the typical "ai" spelling pattern that would create a short "a" sound (like in "said" or "rain").

This is an example of how English spelling and pronunciation can be inconsistent!
