Should the word serpent be capitalized?

The word "serpent" is generally not capitalized unless it is:

* Part of a proper noun: Like "Serpent's Mouth Cave" or "The Serpent's Tale" (a book title).

* Used as a name or title: Like "Serpent" in a fantasy story where it's the name of a character.

Otherwise, "serpent" is a common noun and should be lowercase.
