Why do people in London speak English with an accent?

It's a bit of a funny question! People in London speak English with an accent because that's just how they learned to speak.

Here's why it's not a strange thing:

* Every region has its own accent. This applies to all languages, not just English. Just like someone from Texas will have a different accent than someone from New York, people from London will have a different accent than people from, say, Manchester.

* Accents are part of identity. A person's accent can be tied to their upbringing, their region, and even their social class. It's a natural part of who they are.

* There is no "standard" English accent. While there's a concept of Received Pronunciation (RP), often associated with the BBC, this is a relatively recent development and not the only way to speak English. Many people in England (and around the world) don't speak with RP.

So, while it may seem strange to think about "London English" having an accent, it's simply the way they learned to speak just as everyone else does in their own area. It's what makes English so diverse and interesting!
