What kind of words end in -zyme?

Words ending in "-zyme" are almost always enzymes, which are biological catalysts. Here are some examples:

* Amylase: breaks down starch

* Lipase: breaks down fats

* Protease: breaks down proteins

* Lactase: breaks down lactose (milk sugar)

* Catalase: breaks down hydrogen peroxide

There are a few other words ending in "-zyme", but they are less common and usually related to enzymes:

* Holozyme: a complete enzyme, including its non-protein component

* Apozyme: the protein part of an enzyme, without its non-protein component

So, in general, if you see a word ending in "-zyme", it's likely an enzyme.
