What does church means in old English?

The word "church" in Old English is "cirice". It ultimately comes from the Greek word "kyriakon", meaning "Lord's house".

Interestingly, "cirice" wasn't used exclusively for the building itself. It also referred to the community of believers who gathered there. This understanding of the church as a community is reflected in modern usage, where we often speak of "the church" as a collective body rather than a physical structure.
