What is an English quid?

A "quid" is slang for a British pound sterling, the currency of the United Kingdom.

So, if someone says they have "five quid", they mean they have five pounds sterling.

The term is thought to come from the Latin word "quid pro quo", meaning "something for something", which was sometimes used in financial transactions.
