Why is silent scream an oxymoron?

"Silent scream" is an oxymoron because it combines two contradictory terms:

* Silent: Meaning without sound.

* Scream: A loud, high-pitched cry.

A scream is inherently a sound, so a "silent scream" is a contradiction in terms. It's a figure of speech that creates a powerful image, emphasizing the intensity of the feeling even though it's not being vocalised.
