What is an easy way to explain syllables a child?

Imagine you're clapping your hands every time you say a part of a word that has a vowel sound in it. That's a syllable!

Example:

* Cat - clap, clap (two syllables)

* Dog - clap (one syllable)

* Butterfly - clap, clap, clap (three syllables)

Here's another fun way to think about it:

Syllables are like little jumps when you say a word.

* Hop - one jump (one syllable)

* Jump - two jumps (two syllables)

* Superhero - three jumps (three syllables)

Remember:

* Vowels are the sounds "a, e, i, o, u."

* You can clap, jump, or even stomp your feet to count syllables!

Bonus Tip:

You can even try playing a game where you say a word and have the child clap the syllables.
