What is the origin of word smog?

The word "smog" is a blend of the words "smoke" and "fog".

It was first coined in 1905 by Dr. Henry Antoine Des Voeux, a British physician, to describe the dense, sooty fog that plagued London at the time.

This fog was caused by the combination of industrial pollution (smoke) and natural fog. The term "smog" quickly caught on and has been used ever since to refer to any type of air pollution that reduces visibility and can be harmful to health.
