What is the origin of word bromine?

The word "bromine" originates from the Greek word "bromos", which means "stench" or "foetor". This name was given to the element by its discoverer, Carl Jacob Löwig, in 1825, because of the strong, unpleasant odor of bromine vapor.

Löwig initially called it "muride", after the Latin word for sea water, because he isolated it from seawater. However, he later changed the name to bromine due to its pungent smell.
