When do you capitalize the word English?

You capitalize "English" when it refers to:

* The language: "I'm learning to speak English."

* The people: "The English have a long history."

* The country: "England is a beautiful country."

* The culture or nationality: "She is of English descent."

You don't capitalize "English" when it's used as a general adjective:

* "He has an English accent."

* "This is an English teacup."

Here's a simple rule of thumb: If you can replace "English" with "French" or "Spanish" and it still makes sense, you should not capitalize it.
