Is the y in gym a vowel?

That's a tricky one! The "y" in "gym" is a consonant.

Here's why:

* Sound: The "y" in "gym" makes a consonant sound, like the "y" in "yellow" or "yes."

* Position: It's at the beginning of the word and before a vowel.

* Usage: We don't usually say "gym" as if it had a vowel sound, like "g-i-m."

So, even though "y" can sometimes be a vowel (like in "happy"), in "gym," it's definitely acting as a consonant!
