What does the word sequoia come from?

The word "sequoia" comes from Sequoyah, a Cherokee leader and scholar.

Sequoyah is best known for creating the Cherokee syllabary, a writing system for the Cherokee language. He was such a significant figure in Cherokee culture that the giant redwood tree, *Sequoiadendron giganteum*, was named in his honor by botanist Stephen Endlicher in 1847.
