Where does the word abalone originate?

The word "abalone" comes from the Spanish word "abulón".

It's believed that the Spanish word itself was derived from the indigenous language of the Chumash people who lived in what is now California, where abalone are abundant. The Chumash word for abalone was "awabi".

The word "abulón" was then adopted by other European languages, eventually evolving into "abalone" in English.
