Why is the Sumerian writing called cuneiform?

Sumerian writing is called cuneiform because of the shape of the characters.

* Cuneiform comes from the Latin word "cuneus," meaning wedge.

* The Sumerians used a stylus (a pointed tool) to press wedge-shaped marks into clay tablets.

* These wedge-shaped marks, or cuneiform signs, were arranged in rows to form words and sentences.

Therefore, the writing system got its name from the distinctive wedge-shaped marks that were its defining characteristic.
