How did cuneiform gets its name?

Cuneiform gets its name from the Latin word "cuneus," meaning "wedge." This refers to the wedge-shaped marks that were made on clay tablets using a stylus.

The early Sumerians, who are credited with developing the cuneiform script around 3500 BCE, used a reed stylus to make these wedge-shaped impressions. The shape of the wedge-shaped marks resembled the pointed end of a wedge, hence the name "cuneiform."
