Could many Sumarians write in cuneiform?

It's unlikely that many Sumerians could write in cuneiform.

Here's why:

* Cuneiform was a complex writing system: It used wedge-shaped marks pressed into clay tablets, requiring extensive training and practice to master.

* Scribes were a specialized profession: Writing was a highly valued skill, and those who could write held prestigious positions as scribes, often working in temples, palaces, and government offices.

* Limited access to education: Education was not widely available, and literacy was likely restricted to the elite, including priests, administrators, and wealthy merchants.

While it's impossible to say for sure how many Sumerians were literate, it's safe to assume that writing was not a common skill among the general population.
