When did the hieroglyphic writing develop and how many symbols does it consist of?

Hieroglyphic writing developed in Ancient Egypt around 3200 BCE. It's believed to have evolved from earlier pictographic systems.

It's impossible to give an exact number of symbols for hieroglyphics. This is because:

* The system was constantly evolving: New symbols were added over time, and some fell out of use.

* Variations existed: Different scribes used slightly different forms of the same symbol.

* Context mattered: The meaning of a symbol could change depending on its position in a word or phrase.

However, scholars estimate that there were around 700-800 distinct hieroglyphic symbols in common use during the peak of the Egyptian civilization.
