When to use es with a noun?

You use "es" with a noun in a few specific situations:

1. Pluralizing nouns ending in -s, -x, -ch, -sh, or -z

* Examples:

* bus -> buses

* box -> boxes

* church -> churches

* bush -> bushes

* quiz -> quizzes

2. Pluralizing nouns ending in -y preceded by a consonant

* Examples:

* baby -> babies

* city -> cities

* fly -> flies

* story -> stories

3. Forming the third-person singular present tense of verbs ending in -s, -x, -ch, -sh, or -z

* Examples:

* He passes the ball.

* The cat snatches the mouse.

* She watches TV.

4. Forming the third-person singular present tense of verbs ending in -y preceded by a consonant

* Examples:

* She tries to be quiet.

* He studies for his exams.

* The baby cries for attention.

Important Notes:

* Nouns ending in -y preceded by a vowel simply add an "s" to form the plural:

* boy -> boys

* toy -> toys

* Verbs ending in -y preceded by a vowel add an "s" to form the third-person singular present tense:

* She plays the piano.

* He buys groceries.
