When do you add a es to make the noun plural?

You add "es" to make a noun plural in the following cases:

1. Nouns ending in "s", "x", "ch", "sh", or "z"

* bus - buses

* box - boxes

* church - churches

* dish - dishes

* buzz - buzzes

2. Nouns ending in "o" preceded by a consonant

* hero - heroes

* potato - potatoes

* tomato - tomatoes

Note: There are some exceptions to this rule, such as "photo" and "piano" which become "photos" and "pianos"

3. Nouns ending in "y" preceded by a consonant

* baby - babies

* city - cities

* story - stories

Note: If the "y" is preceded by a vowel, you simply add "s" (e.g., "boy" becomes "boys").

Remember: These rules apply to the regular pluralization of nouns. There are many irregular nouns with unique plural forms (e.g., child - children, woman - women).
