When do you add an es to make a noun plural?

You add "es" to make a noun plural in these cases:

1. Nouns ending in "s", "x", "ch", "sh", or "z":

* bus - buses

* box - boxes

* church - churches

* dish - dishes

* quiz - quizzes

2. Nouns ending in a consonant + "y":

* baby - babies

* city - cities

* fly - flies

* story - stories

Exceptions:

* If the noun ends in a vowel + "y", you simply add an "s". (e.g., boy - boys, monkey - monkeys)

* Some nouns ending in "y" have irregular plurals. (e.g. fly - flies, but lady - ladies)

3. Some nouns have irregular plural forms:

* child - children

* foot - feet

* goose - geese

* man - men

* woman - women

Important Note: While these are the general rules, there are exceptions and unusual cases. It's always helpful to consult a dictionary if you are unsure about the plural form of a particular noun.
