Is sought past tense or participle?

"Sought" is both the past tense and the past participle of the verb "seek".

* Past tense: "He sought the lost treasure."

* Past participle: "He has sought the lost treasure." (Used with "have" or "has" in the present perfect tense)

It can be confusing because they have the same form. However, you can usually determine which form is being used based on the context of the sentence.
